I understand that it’s strange to write a review of this film now and maybe it’s too late. But firstly they asked me, secondly I thought and realized that I have something to say about this film. This is not a masterpiece and not a pass-through. This is one of those films where the authors basically did everything as they wanted. Even though most of the author’s decisions are very ambiguous, and some are completely confusing. I think it’s worth pointing out right away that there will be spoilers in the article, and for those who haven’t seen it, it’s better to watch the movie first. Otherwise, you run the risk of losing your share, but whatever, all the fun is in the film. So let’s begin.
First of all, it’s worth noting that this is a film with Jude Law. For me personally this is a problem. I think everyone has a black list of actors they can’t stand. Jude Law is high on my list. But here, oddly enough, not only did he not cause disgust, but even looked normal somewhere. In general, this problem miraculously did not affect me in the Rippers, which I was pleasantly surprised by. I think a lot thanks to Forest Whitaker. This actor has always aroused some sympathy in me, and never has, so I spat at his presence in the film. The plot itself, at first glance, is dull and secondary to the point of disgrace. Corporation, hit squad, good becomes bad, best friend becomes enemy number one. Well, you know everything yourself. But there is one big and fat thing BUT. The actual denouement of the film. Frankly, I haven’t seen something like this in films for a long time. You’ve been sitting for an hour and a half watching an average action movie, you understand that he’s a happy ending and it seems like he wasted his money at the cinema on such a pass-through movie. But then the real ending appears, and it simply amazes you with its surprise. Perhaps I just didn’t watch attentively in the cinema, yawning periodically, and therefore was surprised by the denouement.
But after rewatching, I noticed https://rembrandt-casino.co.uk/ that, in fact, there are hints that Jude Law’s hero died and this is his dream, the sea. Judge for yourself. What happens after Jude Law’s supposed “survival” in that fatal fight, does it look like reality and what could actually happen?? A bright red door, like in some kind of Mirror Edge, which seems to suggest that you need to go through it, businessmen who professionally wield bladed weapons and carry knives and scissors with them. And of course, one of the final scenes in the white room, where the heroes cut out implants for themselves. Of course, no one should have died from this, but there should still be a limit to everything. Well, in the end, the film mentioned a device that keeps a person in a coma forever and shows him dreams. They just don’t talk about things like that in the film.
Despite all the advantages of the denouement, there are quite a few complaints about the plot itself. Firstly, this is the world itself in which our heroes live. It feels like this is not a future where a corporation has developed a system with life-extending implants (hello “The Island” by Michael Bay), but a future where people have neither brains nor money. Why do almost all clients charge huge sums of money for these organ implants and don’t think about the fact that they can’t pay for them?. After all, when, in our time, a person takes out a loan, he knows exactly how much, when and where he will get the money to repay it. And there people use the freebies provided to them for three months and remember that they still have to pay money for it all only at the end of the third month (don’t look at the notifications that they receive). And then they wander through garbage dumps and abandoned houses. In particular, this all applies to the main character. This is what made me sad. Secondly, this is the fact that a woman was introduced into the plot. Lord, why is it that if a woman is introduced into the main narrative, she only ruins everything. I don’t know, it’s like some unnecessary comedy hero in science fiction films. (for example Rob Schneider in “Judge Dread” or Jarja Binks in the first episode of star wars). And the young lady was won back – if only it was. And of course the most idiotic plot twist, just when Jude Law himself gets an implant. Or rather, it’s not that it’s stupid, it’s that,
that his partner killed his best friend so that he could have his organ replaced with an artificial one, and he had to pay the company a lot of money, only because, you see, Forest Whitaker saw how Jude Law doubted the correctness of their work, hoping that Law would change his mind after that.
I honestly didn’t understand this plot device, it was a bit too much or something.
We can say about the action that it works with a mostly shaky camera and a soundtrack that accompanies it. There really isn’t that much action, but it’s done nicely and, in fact, it’s simply impossible to shoot differently now. It’s 2010 after all. And the soundtrack is excellent, I especially liked the band’s compositions Uncle.
So “Rippers” is another attempt to create something about the future, corporations, friendship, love and all that. This is far from the best attempt, the plot is lame, most of the characters don’t have time to open up in order to empathize with them, you are frankly bored in the first two thirds. But you know, this movie very clearly confirms my point about endings. Let’s say if a film really hooks you as you watch it, and you watch to find out how it ends, and at the end they show an incomprehensible mess, then naturally the impression of the film deteriorates greatly. Even though you show a mega masterpiece there, if the ending is like this, then all your efforts will be in vain. There will only be an unpleasant aftertaste. (TV series Heroes) But with the rippers it’s exactly the opposite. They don’t even try to get you to like them from the start. Sometimes they try to joke, sometimes they try to shoot. But the main thing awaits you at the end. Well, most importantly, do not expect much from this film. You risk being disappointed. The film deserves its 7/10. Of course, not everyone will like it, but I got into it.
